During the 5 months I lived in Bogotá, Colombia in 2012, I was fascinated by the quality of graffiti and street art. Having lived in New York City for years, I assumed I was in the Graffiti capital of the world, and yet was very unimpressed by what New York had to offer. When I got down to Colombia, though, I was blown away.

Here are a few of my favorite images, mostly from the La Candelaria district of Bogotá.

Roadside Macedonia

This was a gorgeous drive along a Macedonian highway, but I eventually had to stop taking photos, because I was getting motion sickness.

Since I started traveling long term, it’s become more and more important to me to make the most of my down time. One of the biggest ways for me to do that was by making sure that I can spend my time on buses watching movies, reading, or even working. Since I tend to get carsick on long rides, it used to drive me crazy trying to balance working against being comfortable.

After a particularly long ride, I found these anti-carsickness bracelets that I had first used when sailing around Corsica for a month when I was 16. I wore them all month on a relatively small sailboat, and had no problems whatsoever.

First sight of The River of Seven Colors in Caño Cristales.

After I’d lived for several months in Bogotá, I had heard the name Caño Cristales many times. The Colombians I worked with all wanted some day to go there, all called it their national treasure, the river of seven colors. We would sit around the lunch table and when that topic came up, just the fact that I was planning on going was fascinating enough to cease all other conversations.
